The service records were unknown prior to my purchasing the vehicle at 98k miles. My engine had ~130k miles at the time of these tests. I finally did a leak-down test and found small leakage from both the valves and rings. Second was Lucas Oil Stabilizer (I was running Mobil 1 in the car at the time) to "help" the rings seal pression readings were the same afterward. First was Restore to "clean" any carbon build-up off the pression readings were the same afterward. Before performing a leak-down test to determine the culprit, I gave two snake oils a try. IIRC the stock cylinder pressure was 179 psi and all 4 of mine were at 140 psi. The car ran fine, but didn't have the performance I expected. I had a 2.4L that was low on compression. Use premium oil and forget the additives. (they also get it out of the sump if rules permit).Īll of the above. Real racers and engine builders use the LIGHTEST vis oil they can get away with. The base stocks in a really good, properly formulated lube oil might/will. The crap in snake oil bottles will not survive in really extreme conditions. As a massive bonus, their oxidative stability is infinitely better. Why are they so much better? The VI is so much higher, they seldom if ever need and VII (Viscosity Index Improvers) as do most Group III based and ALL Group I and II based motor oils - so they simply can not shear down and drop out of grade. If you really want to do something "better" for your engine, use a full synth made from Group IV and V blends. ALL of the right additives will be in it in the right ratio. If your engine NEEDS a higher viscosity oil, just simply buy a higher viscosity oil. Lucas oil "stabilizer" I have never really looked at, but no doubt it is pretty much the same as STP - just a viscosity index improver. Adding ANYTHING else to the oil will take it off spec, and if it was needed in the first place, it would BE there already.ĩ9.9% of aftermarket additives for fuel and oil are pure snake-oil. The balance of additives in the package that gets an oil approved to display the API service classification doughnut is very critical. I have been asked this question a million times, and unless something very different comes along in the aftermarket, the answer will always be the same.
